PhD Project Details
- Faculty: Faculty of Arts
- Staff: International Relations and International Organization (IRIO), ICOG (The Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture)
- Project Scope: The successful PhD candidate will be addressing the problem of urban migration, globalisation, and urban everyday processes using interdisciplinary and qualitative research approach.
- Start Date: May be negotiable during the 2025–2026 academic year
Eligibility Criteria for PHD Scholarship
Applicants should have:
– A Master‘s in Research or Master’s in one of the following (or a related) disciplines:
– International Relations
– Anthropology
– Migration Studies
– Geography
– Urban Studies
– Proper understanding of English academic writing
– Excellent command of French, Dutch, or another language that is appropriate
– Experience in qualitative research, such as:
– Ethnographic fieldwork
– Interviews
– Discourse analysis
– Archival research
– Being ready to live and relocate to the Netherlands
Required Application Documents
All documents must be uploaded in English via the online portal:
1. A statement of motivation (~1,000 words) explaining why you wish to hold the PhD position
2. A research proposal (~1,000 words) outlining your planned contribution to the project
3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
4. Your Master‘s diploma copies and copies of transcripts
5. A copy of your Master‘s thesis
– If not previously done: A letter from a supervisor with the expected date of submission
6. A second sample of academic writing (e.g., article or book chapter), if possible
7. Two academic referees (names and contact details only at this stage)
8. For non-native English speakers: an IELTS/TOEFL certificate is mandatory , unless your degree was taught in English
Benefits and Compensation
Monthly gross salary: €2,901 (1st year) → €3,707 (4th year)
Holiday allowance: 8% of gross annual income
End-of-year bonus: 8.3%
Contract Duration: 4 years (initial 12 months; extension after 6-month review)
Teaching Load: 0.4 FTE across years 2–4
