The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) Fellowship 2025 is designated program that provides financial assistance to U.S. citizens. It also available for residents pursuing graduate-level studies or creative arts research projects in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden. The competitive award promotes international understanding and academic exchange between the U.S. and the Nordic countries.

ASF provides generous fellowships of $23,000 for full academic-year projects and $5,000 for short-term visits (1–3 months). It covers scholars, artists, and professionals to cover project-related, travel, and living expenses. Eligibility Criteria

To become an applicant for the ASF Fellowship, one must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident
  • Completed undergraduate studies prior to the project commencement date
  • Present a well-defined project proposal in research or creative arts
  • Demonstrate relevance and readiness for the intended project
  • Establish academic or professional distinction

Group projects are allowed, with each member having to apply separately with a separate application. Priority is given to graduate students for research related to dissertations and to applicants who have not received ASF awards in the past.

Note: Proficiency in a Nordic language may be required in some cases, depending on the focus of your project, especially for research involving archival sources, interviewing, or community work.

How to Apply

Fill and submit an online application form, via ASF’s official website. The application consists of a project proposal, resume/CV, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and (if applicable) proof of language proficiency. All the above must be submitted by November 1, 2025.

The successful applicants will be informed in spring 2026.
